The Dallas Mavericks or Mavs are based in Dallas, Texas. The team is owned by Mark Cuban. According to Forbes Magazine, the Mavericks are the third most valuable basketball franchise in the United States surpassed only by the New York Knicks and the LA Lakers. The history of the Dallas Mavericks dates back to Dick Motta, who guided Washington Bullets to NBA Championship in 1977-78. He was hired as the team's first head coach due to his well-earned reputation of being a stern disciplinarian yet a great teacher. In 1981, NBA Draft brought three players who became vital parts of the team. The Mavs joined the Midwest Division of the Western Conference, where they remained until the league went to six divisions for the 2004-05 season. But it was Jay Vincent making the biggest difference to the history of the Mavs, leading the team to score 21.4 points per game thus earning NBA All-Rookie Team honors. |
