sikhs: taking a clinical history

There are no religious restrictions about keeping quiet when questioned about health matters, but older members of the Sikh community may be extremely shy when discussing various aspects of their health.

Be sensitive when talking about sexual matters especially; some women may be uncomfortable talking about such matters with a young man, and vice versa. Men and women are considered to be equals in Sikhism, but even so may be embarrassed to discuss their sexual health with a member of the opposite gender.

Young, unmarried girls – and even their brothers – may feel much more relaxed talking to healthcare staff if an adult chaperone (for example, a member of the family or community) is present.
